The England national cricket team will host Sri Lanka for a three-match Test series on Wednesday, August 21. 

The upcoming series is part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. 

As per the England vs Sri Lanka Tests 2024 schedule, the first Test of the three-match series will take place at the Emirates Old Trafford while the second game is scheduled to be played at the Lord's Cricket Ground from August 29.

The third and final Test of the series will begin on September 6 at The Oval in London.

Hosts England are placed third in the ICC men’s team rankings. The hosts last played a Test match against West Indies at home, resulting in a whitewash for the visitors. 

On the other hand, Sri Lanka are in the seventh spot in the ICC men’s team rankings. The island nation played their last Test against Bangladesh. The two-match series ended in a 0-2 clean sweep for Sri Lanka. 

After 13 matches in the ongoing WTC cycle, England are languishing seventh with 57 points (36.54 point percentage). On the other hand, Sri Lanka are placed fourth with 24 points (50 point percentage) after four matches. 

England’s Test captain and all-rounder, Ben Stokes will miss the upcoming series due to a hamstring injury. In his absence, Ollie Pope will lead England for the first time while Harry Brook has been named the vice-captain.

Zak Crawley, top-order batter, will also miss the Tests against Sri Lanka. Dan Lawrence is expected to open the innings as Zak Crawley’s replacement alongside Ben Duckett.

Meanwhile, Dhananjaya Da Silva will lead the Sri Lanka national cricket team with Kusal Mendis serving as his deputy. Their squad includes senior players like Dimuth Karunaratne, Nishan Madushka, Pathum Nissanka and Angelo Mathews. 

Pacer Milan Rathnayake and all-rounder Nisala Tharaka have also been added to Sri Lanka’s roster for the upcoming Tests against England.

The England vs Sri Lanka Test head-to-head record favours the former. England have registered 17 victories in the 36 Test matches that they have played against each other so far. Sri Lanka have emerged victorious eight times while as many as 11 Test matches have ended in draws.

The last time these two teams were face-to-face for a Test series dates back to January 2021. England won the two-match away series 2-0.
