Reigning champions Sydney Sixers will kickstart their title defence in the Big Bash League 2021-22 season with a home match against Melbourne Stars in the tournament opener on Sunday, December 5 at Sydney Cricket Ground.
The 11th season of Australia’s domestic T20 competition will run from December 5, 2021 to January 28, 2022. The league stage games of BBL 2021-22 season is segmented into seven weeks and it will run until January 19, 2022, before the knockouts get underway.
Each team will play 14 matches in the league stage, meaning that there will be a total of 56 league matches played between the eight teams. The eight participating teams are Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder.
After the league stage matches are over, the fourth and the fifth-placed team will play in the eliminator on January 21 while the top two teams will battle in the qualifier round, scheduled on January 22. The winning team of the qualifier round will get a direct place in the final.
Meanwhile, the winner of the eliminator round will take on the third-placed team on January 23 in the knockout. The winner of this contest will eventually lock horns with the losing team of the qualifier on January 26 to book a place in the final.
