With the Ashes exactly a week away, it is high time for us to talk about those who have kept arguably the world’s oldest cricket tournament well and truly alive off the field - the fans. With England hosting this year’s edition, expect the ‘Barmy Army’ to make a telling difference whenever an Australian is either dismissed or hit for a maximum or even deployed near the ropes.
All that coupled with the return of David Warner and Steve Smith following their ball-tampering saga is sure to heat things up. And with that being said, here we present to you the five most creative chants which have been sung during the Ashes over the years.
‘WE LOVE FREDDY FLINTOFF’
A song dedicated to the English all-rounder, it’s safe to say there’s absolutely nothing that these England fans dislike about Freddy Flintoff.
THAT’S MITCHELL JOHNSON
“He balls to the left.
He balls to the right.
That’s Mitchell Johnson,
His bowling is sh*te.”
Sung during the 2010-11 Ashes, pacer Mitchell Johnson was mentioned in one of Barmy Army’s chants, while he was walking back to start his run-up.
‘EVERYWHERE WE GO’
Sung during the fifth day of the Ashes Test at the SCG in 2011, England fans made their presence felt in the most perfect way possible…
‘WE’LL TAKE THE URN HOME’
Again from the 2011 Ashes series, England led by Andrew Strauss made a telling impact and this is how they were rewarded from the fans.
‘HEY HEY RICKY!’
The Barmy Army, for this, went to the extreme and recorded a full-fledged music video before the 2009 Ashes. The crust is as simple as you can think;
“Hey Hey Ricky, what you gonna do?
We’re taking back the Ashes,
They don’t belong to you.”
