Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed as the captain of the Indian cricket team for the T20I series against Sri Lanka which is scheduled to start on July 27, 2024. Suryakumar succeeds the outgoing skipper Rohit Sharma, who led India to the T20 World Cup title in 2024.

Suryakumar Yadav has led India in seven T20 internationals in the Australia and South Africa series during November-December 2023.

Captaincy aside, Suryakumar, who is ranked second on the list of top batters in men’s T20I cricket, has been a revelation in T20s with his innovative and effective shot-making all around the park. 

With over 2,000 runs in T20Is, including four hundreds, at an average of 43.33 and an impressive strike rate of 167.74, the 33-year-old is an experienced campaigner in the shortest format. 

Apart from his short stint as captain of the Indian T20 team, Suryakumar has been in charge of Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the premier domestic T20 competition in India. He also captained Team Mumbai in a solitary game in the Indian T20 League in 2023.

Suryakumar made his captaincy debut for India in T20Is in the five-match series against Australia in November 2023. He had a dream start to his captaincy career as India won the first T20I by two wickets. The Mumbai batter was awarded the Player of the Match as he top-scored for India. 

India won the series against Australia by an emphatic margin of 4-1 with Suryakumar finishing as the second-highest run-getter in the series. 

Suryakumar also led India in the T20I series against South Africa with the three-match series being tied at 1-1 and a game being abandoned. He once again played a pivotal role in India’s win top-scoring in the contest with a 56-ball 100. 

Suryakumar was adjudged the Player of the Match for his hundred in the third T20I. He also won the Player of the Series award as he finished as the top-scorer in the series.

Overall, Suryakumar has led India in seven T20Is winning five and losing two. He has scored 300 runs from seven innings at an average of 42.86 and a strike rate of 164.84.

Suryakumar has also led Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for two seasons in 2019 and 2021. He made his captaincy debut for Mumbai against Mizoram in November 2019 at the age of 29. Mumbai won that match by 10 wickets.

Suryakumar captained Mumbai for a total of 16 matches with the team winning 10 of those and losing out on the remaining six. During that period, he scored 467 runs at an average of 38.92 and a strike rate of 165.60.

Suryakumar also captained Team Mumbai in a solitary match against Kolkata in the Indian T20 League 2023 season. Mumbai won the game by five wickets with Surya scoring 43 runs in that match.
