Rohit Sharma’s highest score in ODI cricket is 264 off 173 balls, which he scored for the Indian cricket team against Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata back in 2014.
During the fourth ODI of Sri Lanka’s tour of India, India captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first.
Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane opened the innings for the hosts on a good batting track. After losing the early wickets of Rahane (28) and Ambati Rayudu (8), Rohit played a devastating innings as he broke the record for the highest individual score in ODI cricket.
The right-handed batter smashed 264 off 173 balls to break Virender Sehwag’s previous record of 219, which he scored against West Indies at Indore in 2011.
While out in the middle, though, breaching the record was never on Rohit’s mind.
“I knew he (Sehwag) got 219 because when I scored 209 the last time, someone said I had missed the world record by 10 runs. But while batting I was not looking at that, which is why you must have seen it on TV also, I was a little surprised when I saw my teammates standing and giving me an ovation from the dressing room,” Rohit had said after the match.
“I was a little surprised as to what happened, but then I realised I must have surpassed 219,” he added.
Rohit’s double ton and Virat Kohli’s 66 powered India to 404/5 in their 50 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 251 in 43.1 overs as the hosts secured a massive 153-run victory.
For India, Dhawal Kulkarni was the wrecker-in-chief in the bowling department as he picked four wickets for 34 runs in his quota of 10 overs.
Rohit’s record-breaking innings was laced with 33 fours and nine huge sixes. This was the opening batter’s second double century in ODI format as he had hammered 209 against Australia at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium a year earlier.
Interestingly, Rohit followed his double hundred with another double ton (208 not out) against Sri Lanka in Mohali in 2017. He is the only player to score three double hundreds in one-day internationals (ODIs).
Since making his ODI debut against Ireland in 2007, Rohit Sharma has amassed 9283 runs in 230 ODI matches at an average of 48.60. He has registered 29 hundreds and 44 half-centuries in the 50-over format.
Rohit is currently the seventh-highest run-scorer for India in ODI format, only behind Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Mohammad Azharuddin.
