The Riverside Ground is a cricket venue in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, England. It is home to Durham County Cricket Club and has hosted several international matches.
Established in 1995, the venue hosted its first men’s international game in the ICC Cricket World Cup 1999, when Pakistan took on Scotland. The first T20 international match was played at this venue in 2012 when South Africa toured England.
The Riverside Ground has a seating capacity of 17,000 for international matches and it gets reduced to 5,000 for domestic games.

England T20 specialist Alex Hales holds the record for scoring the most T20I runs at the Riverside Ground. The swashbuckling batter with a decent technique has amassed 148 runs in three innings at an average of 49.33.
Hales smacked a quick-fire 94 against Australia in 2013, registering his highest score at the venue at a solid strike rate of 154.10.
Most wickets
Former English pacer Jade Dernbach holds the record for picking the most T20I wickets at Riverside Ground. The South Africa-born speedster scalped five wickets in two innings at an economy of 6.75.
In 2013, Dernbach returned with 3/23 against Australia, making it his best T20I figures at the venue.
Highest individual score
English opener Alex Hales holds the record for scoring the highest individual score at Riverside Ground. Hales smashed 94 off 61 balls against Australia in the second T20I of Australia’s tour of England and Scotland in 2013.
Striking at over 150, Hales’s match-winning knock included 11 fours and a couple of sixes. England won the game comfortably by 27 runs to tie the two-match series at 1-1 and his knock is the highest individual score at Riverside Ground so far.
Best bowling figures
West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite picked three wickets for 20 runs from 3.3 overs against England in 2017 in the only T20I of the seires. It is the best bowling figures by any bowler in T20 internationals at this venue and helped West Indies win the game by 21 runs as they successfully defended their total of 176.
Highest team total
Riding on Alex Hales’s 94-run blitz and Michael Lumb’s 43-run knock, England posted 195 for five against Australia in 2013 at Riverside Ground. It is the highest team total in T20Is at this venue and helped the hosts comfortably win the contest by 27 runs to tie the two-match series 1-1.
Lowest team total
In 2012, England were reduced to 118/7 by South Africa in the first T20I of South Africa’s tour of England. This is the lowest team total in T20Is at Riverside Ground and South Africa went on to win the game by seven wickets with six balls remaining as they took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Highest partnership
England’s Alex Hales and Michael Lumb added 111 runs for the first wicket against Australia in the second T20I of a two-match series in 2013. This remains the only instance of a batting pair scoring 100 or more T20I runs together at the venue. Hosts England won the match by 27 runs and drew the series 1-1.
