Indian cricket legend Rohit Sharma has hit the most sixes in ICC ODI Cricket World Cup history.
Fondly known as the Hitman for his belligerent style of batting that’s seen him strike the most sixes in international cricket, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that he leads the way for most sixes in ICC ODI Cricket World Cup.
Rohit Sharma claimed the record for most sixes in ICC ODI Cricket World Cup history in the first semi-final of the 2023 World Cup.
After winning the toss and deciding to bat first against New Zealand, Rohit got India off to a swift start with some monstrous hitting that also saw him break the record for most maximums in ODI World Cup history.
He did so in the fourth over of the match when he smashed New Zealand’s Tim Southee for a six over deep square that took him to 50 maximums in the history of the tournament.
By doing so, Rohit Sharma went past Chris Gayle, who was the previous holder of the record having struck 49 sixes in 50-over World Cups over the course of his career.
Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, South African legend AB de Villiers, and Aussie opener David Warner are the players who complete the top five list of most sixes in ICC ODI Cricket World Cup history.

Rohit Sharma | 51 sixes
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has been a part of three ODI World Cups. He first played in the 2015 World Cup in Australia and the subsequent two editions of the tournament in 2019 and 2023 in England and India respectively. The swashbuckling right-hander who has struck the most centuries in 50-over World Cups - including five in World Cup 2019 - hit as many as 28 sixes in World Cup 2023 to surpass Chris Gayle with a total of 51 maximums to his name.
Chris Gayle | 49 sixes
Second on the list for most sixes in ODI World Cups is Chris Gayle who hit 49 maximums over the course of his 50-over World Cup career that spanned from 2003 to 2019. A part of five editions of ODI World Cups, Gayle took 34 innings to hit almost half a century of sixes in the tournament’s history and held the record for a long time before being displaced by Rohit Sharma for top spot in November 2023.
Glenn Maxwell | 43 sixes
Known for his ability to hit sixes to almost any part of the ground, Australia’s Glenn Maxwell comes in third on the list of most sixes in 50-over World Cups. Similar to Rohit Sharma, Maxwell has featured in three ODI World Cups in 2015, 2019 and 2023. Across these three editions, the powerful right-hander has smashed 43 sixes in just 23 innings. He also became the first player to score a double hundred in an ODI chase against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup.
