With both Kolkata and Hyderabad heading into Match 8 with nary a win to their name in the 2020 Indian T20 League season thus far, it was clear one of them would break their duck. Unfortunately for HYD, they are now the only squad without a victory as KOL executed a textbook chase while affecting the record books in more than a few ways.
From Pat Cummins' comeback to Man of the Match Shubman Gill's unbeaten knock, we look at some of the key stats from the event.
The difference a year made for Varun Chakravarthy
Varun Chakravarthy made the news in 2019 but not for the reasons he'd have liked. After being purchased for INR 8.4 crores, he only bowled three overs and conceded 35 runs, picking up one wicket in the entire season.
Match | Overs | Runs | Wickets | Economy |
vs KOLin 2019 | 3 | 35 | 1 | 11.67 |
Today vs HYD | 4 | 25 | 1 | 6.25 |
However, that was all put behind him today as he bagged the most prized scalp of the HYD batting order in David Warner. Facing the first ball following the time-out, the Aussie, who had batted brilliantly till then, was unable to get a read on Chakravarthy's delivery. Likely assuming that the ball was going to turn, Warner ended up donating an easy catch to Chakravarthy.
Manish Pandey's half-century
Following Warner's above-mentioned dismissal, HYD's Manish Pandey soldiered on to strike up a 62-run partnership with Wriddhiman Saha that formed the backbone of their scoreline on the night.
Pandey whacked out three boundaries and a pair of sixes en route to 38-ball 51. It was his:
- 16th Indian T20 League fifty
- 7th Indian T20 League fifty while playing for HYD
- 2nd Indian T20 League fifty vs KOL
Pat Cummins' comeback
Pat Cummins was KOL's most expensive foreign purchase in Indian T20 League history but suffered through a less-than-memorable spell in KOL's first match of the Indian T20 League 2020 season when he gave away 49 runs to Mumbai.

Match | Wicket | Runs | Balls | Econ |
Match 8, Kolkata vs Hyderabad, 26 Sep 2020 | 1 | 19 | 24 | 4.75 |
Match 25, Mumbai vs. Delhi, 22 Apr 2017 | 2 | 20 | 24 | 5.00 |
Match 56, Delhi vs. Bangalore, 14 May 2017 | 2 | 21 | 24 | 5.25 |
Match 15, Delhi vs. Punjab, 15 Apr 2017 | 2 | 23 | 24 | 5.75 |
Match 28, Chennai vs. Kolkata, 28 Apr 2015 | 0 | 25 | 24 | 6.25 |
However, he more than made up for it today against HYD. Bowling with the new ball in the second over, he sent the always-potent Jonny Bairstow back to an early shower and finished the night with 1-19 and an economy rate of 4.75 - the best among all the KOL bowlers.
This was also the first time Cummins bowled three overs during Powerplay and it turned out to be his best Powerplay performance. In the past, the highest he'd bowled during Powerplay was two overs and usually, he conceded a fairly large number of runs or went wicket-less.
Gill's guile and Morgan's mettle
KOL picking up their season's first win in style, with 12 balls to spare, was largely down to the performances of Shubman Gill and Eoin Morgan.
Opener Shubman was joined by Morgan in the seventh over with the score reading a worrying 53-3. However, the two went on to strike up a breezy 92-run partnership that ended up being KOL's best partnership for any wicket against HYD.
