The Indian cricket team and the Sri Lankan cricket team have a rich history in the sport dating back to 1979 when the two sides squared off for the first time in that year’s ODI World Cup.
The fixture, played in a 60-over format at that time, saw the Lankans win the match by 47 runs as middle-order batter Duleep Mendis won the Player of the Match award.
Since then, the two sides were involved in some high-magnitude ODI matches, but the ICC World Cup 2011 final inarguably stands out, where Team India won the match by six wickets with just 10 balls to spare to lift the trophy for the second time and the first in 28 years.
As far as overall ODI match-ups are concerned, the two teams have come together in more than 150 matches, with Team India having an upper hand in the head-to-head record.

India vs Sri Lanka ODI records
Highest team total
India posted a daunting total of 414/7 in December 2009, which is one of the highest ODI totals by the Indian cricket team.
The contest can be deemed as one of the thrilling matches between the two sides as Sri Lanka came within touching distance of the target as they lost the match by just three runs. Virender Sehwag and Tillakaratne Dilshan scored a century for their respective sides.
Nonetheless, Sri Lanka had something to cherish for as their final score, 411/8, made it to the list of highest totals in ODIs.
Lowest team total
Team India was bowled out for 54 in the final of the Coca-Cola Champions Trophy 2000/01, an ODI tri-series between India, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
Chasing a target of 300, the Sourav Ganguly-led side was undone by a spectacular bowling performance by Sri Lanka as only all-rounder Robin Singh reached double figures. The Lankans won the lopsided summit clash by 245 runs.
Highest individual score
Team India batter Rohit Sharma smashed a scintillating 264 off 173 balls in November 2014 at the iconic Eden Gardens, which is the highest individual score in ODIs since the inception of the format.
The hitman went berserk in his record knock as he took the Lankan bowlers to cleaners, hitting 33 fours and nine sixes en route to his double ton. India won the match by 153 runs.
Interestingly, Sri Lanka faced a similar brunt by Rohit Sharma once again in December 2017 when the right-handed batter scored another double century (208*) to help his team win by 141 runs.
Best bowling figures
Former Sri Lankan spinner Muthiah Muralidaran bagged 7/30 in the group phase fixture of the Coca-Cola Champions Trophy 2000/01, which is the best bowling figures in the match-ups between the two sides.
The veteran bowler’s breathtaking spell derailed the Indian batting line-up, guiding his team to a 69-run win.
Most wickets
Muthiah Muralidaran is the leading wicket-taker in the India vs Sri Lanka ODIs, with 74 scalps in 63 matches.
The legendary bowler went wicketless in the World Cup 2011 final versus India, which was the last match of his illustrious international career.
Highest partnership
Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid hold the record for the highest partnership when the duo added 318 runs for the second wicket in a league phase match of the 1999 World Cup.
With both the batters getting their centuries, the Mohammad Azharuddin-led side cruised to a comfortable win by 157 runs.
