India tour of Australia: A look at the records that were broken in third ODI

A valiant effort from the likes of Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja gave India a consolation win as they defeated Australia by 13 runs in the final ODI of the three-match series at the Manuka Oval on Wednesday, December 2.

India, after having decided to bat first, were reduced to 152/5 in 32 overs and were in an absolute state of bother. All-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja though took the matter in their hands and cruised all the way to 302/5 in the final 18 overs, playing an unbeaten record stand of 150. Australia, in response, too had a shaky start, but Glenn Maxwell steadied the ship with a blistering 38-ball 59. But as his wicket fell, the Australian innings fell like a house of cards and India got their victory in style.

The game had plenty to talk about, but today, we take a look at the records that were broken:

Virat Kohli's list of records

Days after completing 22,000 international runs, Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli etched another record to his name, this time completing 12,000 ODI runs in a record time. The 32-year-old was 23 runs away from the milestone before the game and completed the landmark with a single against Sean Abbott in the 13th over. With this, Kohli became the fastest player to complete 12,000 ODI runs as it took him just 251 (242 innings) games to do so, surpassing former batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who had reached the milestone in 309 games (300 innings).

Kohli went on to score 63 off 78 balls on Wednesday and for the third consecutive time, he was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood. It was the third incident that a bowler dismissed him in three consecutive innings in ODIs.

Pandya-Jadeja's record partnership

The game looked over for India as they lost wickets in quick succession during the middle overs. But Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja stitched an unbeaten 150-run stand to change the course of the game. While Pandya scored 92 off 76, Jadeja scored 66 in 50 deliveries. Ironically, Pandya took a whopping 55 balls to complete his half-century but took just 21 balls to scored his next 42 runs. A fifty on Wednesday means this was Pandya's fourth half-century against Australia.

The duo cracked several records as their 150-run partnership is now the best sixth-wicket stand in Australia in the ODIs. This is also the best sixth-wicket stand in an Australia vs India ODI match.

Glenn Maxwell finding form at right time

All-rounder Glen Maxwell scored his second consecutive ODI half-century as he marked a potential revival for his team on Wednesday. Though Australia fell a few runs short, the 32-year-old ended the series with 167 runs, scoring at an average and strike rate of 83.50 and 194.18 respectively. This is now the second-best strike-rate by a batsman with 150+ runs in any ODI series. Considering Australia now play three-match T20I series against India, it is safe to say the all-rounder has found his footing at the right time.

Wednesday's game between India and Australia was the last ODI for either side in 2020, and that means Maxwell ends this year with a total of with 353 runs at the average of 70.60 in the format, which is second-best by a Test-playing nation played in 2020 with a minimum of five innings
