The Indian cricket team holds the record for the highest successful run chase in Test in India.
Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, India scripted history as they successfully chased down 387 for the loss of just four wickets against England at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in 2008.
The hosts broke the previous record held by West Indies as they chased down 276 with five wickets in hand back in 1987.

India’s 387/4 is the highest successful run chase in Tests in India. During the first Test of England’s tour of India in Chennai in 2008, the hosts achieved the incredible milestone after they gunned down a daunting target on the final day of the Test. Chasing 387, India rode on Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 103 along with contributions from Yuvraj Singh (85 not out), Virender Sehwag (83) and Gautam Gambhir (66) to enter the history books. Earlier, England posted 316 in their first innings after electing to bat first. The MS Dhoni-led India scored 241 in reply before England declared their second innings at 311/9. Virender Sehwag was adjudged the Player of the Match for his incredible knock in the second innings.
West Indies - 276/5 vs India | Delhi | 1987
West Indies feature second on the list for the highest successful run chase in Tests in India. Chasing 276 in the fourth innings, captain Viv Richards led from the front with an unbeaten 109 off just 111 balls to help West Indies register a sensational five-wicket over hosts India in the first Test in Delhi in November 1987. Earlier, India were bundled out for 75 in their first innings courtesy of Patrick Patterson’s five-wicket haul. The Dilip Vengsarkar-led India then bounced back to bowl out West Indies for 127 and later scored 327 in their second innings.

India’s 276/5 is third on the list for the highest successful run chase in Tests in India. The MS Dhoni-led hosts chased down 276 with five wickets in hand during the first Test of West Indies’ tour of India in Delhi in 2011. Chasing a challenging total in the fourth innings, India rode on fifties from Virender Sehwag (55), Sachin Tendulkar (76) and VVS Laxman (58 not out) to successfully gun down the total and take a 1-0 lead in the series. Earlier, Daren Sammy’s West Indies scored 304 in their first innings before they bowled out India for 209. The hosts then bounced back as they skittled out the visitors for 180 in their second innings.
