Hyderabad, Mumbai combine to register highest aggregate score in a T20 encounter

The nature of Twenty20 or T20 cricket is by definition action-packed, intense and high-scoring encounters where plenty of runs are scored by the batters at the expense of hapless bowlers at task.

When T20 cricket first entered the consciousness of the larger cricketing fraternity, it was synonymous with high-scoring matches at brisk run rates.

Over the years, T20 cricket has evolved into the most popular form of cricket, especially amongst youngsters who love to be entertained with high-scoring games featuring plenty of boundaries where batters dominate the bowlers.

In T20s initial years, getting to totals of 200 and above was considered an incredible feat before it became normalised over the past few years.

However, teams are now transcending the limits of the 20-over format with sides crossing the 500-run mark for aggregate runs made by both teams in a match. The 500 runs aggregate score in T20s has been breached on five occasions so far.

Every so often, batters from both teams in the match go rampant with their approach and put on a batting spectacle which makes for high-scoring encounters. Here we have a look at the highest aggregate score in T20.

Hyderabad vs Mumbai in Indian T20 League 2024

After electing to field first in match 8 of Indian T20 League 2024, Team Mumbai would soon regret their decision as Hyderabad put their bowlers to the sword. Fifties from Travis Head (62), Abhishek Sharma (63), and Heinrich Klaasen (80*) as well as an unbeaten 28-ball 42 by Aiden Markram helped Hyderabad to 277/3 - the highest team total in Indian T20 League history. In reply, Mumbai produced a valiant effort and 246/5 from their 20 overs as the two teams combined for 523 runs in total, which is the highest aggregate score in T20 history. 

South Africa vs West Indies in 2nd match of three-game series 2023

The second game of a three-match series between South Africa and West Indies in 2023 witnessed the two teams collectively put on 517 runs together. Kyle Mayers’ 51 and a 46-ball 118 helped West Indies post 258/5 in their 20 overs. Chasing a 259-run target, openers Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks made 100 and 68 respectively to help the Proteas chase down the target in 18.5 overs and level the series at 1-1.

Quetta Gladiators vs Multan Sultans in PSL 2023

Match 28 of Pakistan Super League 2023 was a run-fest between Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. After losing the toss and batting first, Multan Sultans went on to post a mammoth total of 262/3 courtesy of Usman Khan’s 120, skipper Mohammad Rizwan’s 55, and Tim David’s 43. In the second innings, Quetta Gladiators managed to score 253/8 in their 20 overs with Omair Yousuf and Iftikhar Ahmed making 67 and 53 respectively. The aggregate score of 515 in this game is the third-highest in T20 history.
