The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women’s cricket team fell short of a gold medal after losing to the mighty Australians by nine runs in the final of the inaugural Women’s T20 event at Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, England.
Interestingly, this was India’s third consecutive defeat in a major final in recent years. Under Harmanpreet Kaur’s captaincy, India had succumbed to an 85-run defeat against hosts Australia in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final at Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2020. Previously in 2017, India lost to hosts England by just nine runs in the ICC Women’s World Cup final at the iconic Lord’s.
While the Indian women’s cricket team should feel proud of reaching the finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2020 and Commonwealth Games 2022, they will hope to clinch their first major ICC trophy under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur.
Let’s have a look at how Harmanpreet Kaur has fared as a captain in international cricket.
Harmanpreet Kaur captaincy record
Harmanpreet Kaur made her captaincy debut against arch-rivals Pakistan in the 2012 Women’s T20 Asia Cup final at the Guanggong International Cricket Stadium in China.
Opting to bat, India lost wickets at regular intervals as they were bundled out for 81 in their 20 overs. Defending just 82 runs, an all-round bowling performance helped Harmanpreet’s India secure an 18-run victory in the final to clinch the Asia Cup title.
Since then, Harmanpreet has led India in 96 T20Is and 11 ODI matches so far. She is yet to captain India in Test cricket.
The Punjab-born cricketer has recorded the third highest wins as captain in women’s T20 internationals so far. Under Harmanpreet’s captaincy, India Women have won 54 of the 96 matches while suffering 37 losses. She has a win percentage of 59.23 in WT20Is.
Only former England captain Charlotte Edwards (68) and Australia skipper Meg Lanning (68) have more wins in women’s T20I cricket.
During her T20I captaincy reins, Harmanpreet has scored 2,128 runs in 96 matches at an average of 30.84. She has hit one hundred and eight fifties so far.
