Dinesh Karthik announced his retirement from the Indian T20 League after his campaign ended with Team Bengaluru in the recently-concluded 2024 edition.
Regarded as one of the best finishers in modern-day cricket, Dinesh Karthik ended his Indian T20 League career with another memorable season with Team Bengaluru.
Batting once again in the lower middle-order, the 38-year-old played a pivotal role in helping Team Bengaluru qualify for the Indian T20 League 2024 playoffs.
In the 2024 edition, Karthik scored 326 runs in 15 matches at an impactful strike rate of 187.35 while also maintaining an average of 36.22. He also slammed two fifties.
After registering just one victory in their opening eight matches, Karthik’s Bengaluru went on to win six matches in a row, including beating defending champions Team Chennai in a virtual knockout at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium to secure their place in the last four.
However, Bengaluru later suffered a four-wicket defeat against Team Rajasthan in the Eliminator to get knocked out of the Indian T20 League 2024.
Meanwhile, Karthik finished his Indian T20 League career with 4,842 runs in 257 matches at an average of 26.32 and a strike rate of 135.36. He hit 22 half-centuries in the marquee T20 tournament.
Since making his Indian T20 League debut in 2008, Karthik represented six franchises including Delhi, Punjab, Mumbai, Bengaluru, now-defunct Gujarat and Kolkata.
The highlight of his Indian T20 League career was leading Kolkata between 2018 and 2020.
Overall, Karthik has played over 400 T20s in his illustrious career.
Having made his debut for the Tamil Nadu cricket team in late 2002 against Baroda as a wicket-keeper, Karthik has since played 167 first-class matches and 260 List-A matches.
He is also the current captain of the Tamil Nadu cricket team in domestic cricket.
Earlier in September 2004, Karthik made his Indian cricket team debut against England in a One-Day International (ODI) encounter at Lord’s.
He later made his Test debut against Australia at the Wankhede Stadium in November that year.
Two years later, he played his first T20 international against South Africa at Johannesburg.
Since then, Karthik represented India in 26 Tests, 94 ODIs and 60 T20Is.
The flamboyant wicketkeeper-batter was also part of the Indian squad that won the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. Know more about Dinesh Karthik’s career stats.
