It's no coincidence that Chris Gayle is called the "Universal Boss." To begin with, the Jamaican has scored the fastest century in T20 cricket, registered the highest individual score (175*) in T20 cricket, and is the fastest to reach the 10,000-run mark besides being the leading run-scorer in the format.
Besides his 22 centuries and 87 half-centuries in T20 cricket, Gayle is the only player to hit over 1000 boundaries and as many sixes in his time in the game. The records would go on, but being an attacking player has its fair share of flaws too.
Gayle sets the ball rolling right from the get-go, and over the years, bowlers have managed to breach his defence. In this context, his West Indies teammate Dwayne Bravo has dismissed him a whopping seven times, the most any bowler has ever managed.
Bowlers who dismissed Chris Gayle the most in T20 cricket
Bowler | Dismissals |
Dwayne Bravo | 7 |
Harbhajan Singh | 6 |
Mohammad Hafeez | 5 |
Mohammad Irfan | 5 |
Ravichandran Ashwin | 5 |
Rashid Khan | 5 |
Sunil Narine | 5 |
Shane Watson | 5 |
However, it is no surprise considering the pair have played against each other in the Indian T20 League, Pakistan Super League and the Caribbean Premier League. If anything, Harbhajan Singh’s name does capture a few eyeballs. The veteran Indian spinner has dismissed Gayle an impressive six times in T20 cricket.
But then again, Gayle has never been at his best against slow bowling and a tricky customer as Harbhajan Singh is bound to make things worse.
Furthermore, six bowlers have overpowered the Universal Boss five times in the shortest format. This includes Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Irfan, Ravichandran Ashwin, Rashid Khan, Sunil Narine and Shane Watson.
The list shows that Gayle primarily struggles against spinners, largely because the ball drifts away from his bat. Sometimes he hits them hard, but he has also lost wickets more often than not. Fair or not, he is still human.
