Team Chennai preserved their unique record of never losing an Indian T20 League match on April 25 after beating Bangalore by 69 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
The three-time Indian T20 League champions are now unbeaten in seven Indian T20 League matches played on April 25th.
Chennai’s first win on this date came against Mumbai in 2010 when they beat them by 22 runs after Player of the Match Suresh Raina scored an unbeaten 57 to set up a challenging run chase.
The following year witnessed them get the better of Pune with a 25-run victory that saw Michael Hussey score 61 to set up a low-scoring run chase that Chennai’s bowlers helped defend successfully.
MS Dhoni‘s Chennai third win on April 25 came in 2013 against Hyderabad and it was a rather nerve-wracking affair that went down to the wire. Chasing a target of 160, the Chennai skipper played a starring role and was adjudged Player of the Match after scoring an unbeaten 67 to get his team over the line with five wickets and two balls remaining.
Chennai’s fourth win on this day came the following year against Mumbai and it was another close game. After Player of the Match Mohit Sharma picked up a four-fer to reduce Mumbai to 141, Brendon McCullum smashed an unbeaten 53-ball 71 to take his team home in 19 overs.
McCullum also starred in Chennai’s next Indian T20 League win on April 25 courtesy of a 44-ball 66 that helped them post a big target which Hyderabad got nowhere near.
Like their seventh win on April 25, 2021, Chennai’s sixth also came against Virat Kohli’s Bangalore team. In a high-scoring and nervy contest, the match went to the final over as the three-time champions chased a target of 206.
Bangalore looked like they could win the game at one stage but Dhoni produced a match-winning knock of 70 unbeaten from 34 balls to get his team home with five wickets and two balls to spare.
Their latest victory on April 25 saw a certain Ravindra Jadeja producing a Man of the Match display with both bat and the ball. After the all-rounder scored 62 off just 28 deliveries to take his team to 191/4, he returned with a bowling figure of 3/13 to cap off a brilliant win for his team.
