The defunct Champions League T20 cricket tournament could make a return soon in 2024.
As per reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket Australia (CA), and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are in talks to reintroduce the Champions League T20 cricket competition.
“I think the Champions League was ahead of its time. The T20 landscape wasn't mature enough at that point. I think it is now," Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins said at an event in Mumbai on Tuesday, April 2.
“I know that there's active conversations between Cricket Australia, the ECB, and the BCCI about the Champions League,” Cummins added.
Launched in 2008, the Champions League T20 cricket tournament was held annually from 2009 to 2014.
Featuring 12 teams, the inaugural edition of the CLT20 was held in India in 2009. New South Wales defeated Trinidad and Tobago by 41 runs in the CLT20 2009 final to clinch the first title.
Since then, the high-profile T20 tournament was hosted in India on three other occasions while South Africa staged it twice.
The last edition of the CLT20 was held in India in 2014 and featured 12 teams including three teams from India, two each from Australia and South Africa and one each from New Zealand, Pakistan and the West Indies.
Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, Chennai won the final edition of the Champions League T20 after beating fellow Indian T20 League side Kolkata by eight wickets in the 2014 final.
Since the inception of the CLT20, Mumbai and Chennai were the most successful teams in the competitions with two titles each.
The likes of New South Wales Blues and Sydney Sixers clinched the coveted title once each.
Initially launched to mimic football’s UEFA Champions League, the Champions League T20 cricket tournament failed to live up to its expectations as interest dipped after six editions, which resulted in a commercial failure.
As several sponsors pulled out after initial years, the tournament was discontinued in 2015.
In that very year, the Indian Supreme Court’s verdict on the Indian T20 League betting and spot-fixing scandal led to the suspension of two Indian T20 League teams - Chennai and Rajasthan.
After a gap of 10 years, there is a possibility of the Champions League T20 returning to the cricket calendar.
However, the biggest challenge will be to find a window to slot the Champions League T20 in the already jam-packed cricket calendar.
With that being said, we take a look at the Champions League T20 winners list.
