The record for best bowling figures against India in T20I belongs to West Indies’ Obed McCoy. The left-arm pacer registered figures of 6/17 in the second T20I of the five-match series on August 1, 2022.
McCoy’s six-wicket haul is not only the best figure against India, but is now also the best bowling figure for West Indies in Twenty20 Internationals.
McCoy was on top of his game in the second T20I of a five-match series against India. His first victim of the match was the Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who departed on the very first delivery of the match, making him only the third Indian batter to be dismissed on the first ball of a T20I match.
In the third over, the pacer got the better of Suryakumar Yadav. After Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja had stabilized India’s innings, McCoy pushed the visitors on the back foot again in the death overs where he ended up picking four wickets.
The list of his victims included Jadeja, Dinesh Karthik, Ravichandran Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Riding on McCoy’s record return, West Indies restricted India to 138 runs in 20 overs and thanks to Brandon Kings’ half-century followed by Devon Thomas’ late charge, the Windies won the game by five wickets.
Surpassed Wanindu Hasaranga’s record
McCoy’s six-wicket haul has surpassed Wanindu Hasaranga’s previous best of 4/9 against India which he recorded in July 2021.
Taking on the Men in Blue in the third and final T20I, the spinner terrorized the Indian players and got the wickets of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Varun Chakravarthy to finish with four wickets and an economy of 2.25.
Thanks to his brilliant bowling effort, India were restricted to just 81/8 in 20 overs, their third lowest score in T20Is. The Lankan Lions got to their target inside 15 overs as they won the match by seven wickets.
Before Hasaranga, New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner held the record for best bowling figures against India in T20I cricket. The all-rounder recorded figures of 4/11 in the 13th match of the 2016 World T20. Riding on his return, New Zealand dismantled India for a mere 79 runs in 18.1 overs and won the match.
