India Women cricketers have been asked by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to raise invoices in order to get their shares of the prize money from the 2020 T20 World Cup. India had finished runners-up at the tournament in Australia and earned prize money around half a million US dollars.
However, as The Telegraph reported two days ago, they are yet to receive their shares, although the International Cricket Council (ICC) has disbursed the money to the BCCI as well as to Cricket Australia, which has passed it on to its title-winning squad.
A BCCI official claimed that the players will be paid the prize money by the end of this week. “The members of the Indian women’s cricket team will be getting the share of their prize money by the end of this week. The transactions have been processed and I am expecting that they will receive their share very soon,” a senior board official was quoted as saying by PTI.
When questioned as to why there had been such a long delay, the official added, “We received the prize money amount late last year.”
“It’s not just one payment for women. Whether it’s the central contract of the men’s team, international match fees, domestic fees of men and women, everything is taking a bit of time because of the prevailing situation,” a former BCCI office-bearer, still associated with a state association, told PTI.
The board has reportedly disbursed other payments -- such as central contracts fees for 2019-20, match fees and appearance fees for the 2020 Women’s T20 Challenge -- to the players.
The India Under-19 boys’ team, which also finished runners-up at the 2020 U-19 World Cup held weeks before the Women’s T20 World Cup, has also reportedly been paid its share of the prize money.
